본문내용
What is ‘lingua franca’?
→ a language systematically used to make communication possible between people not sharing a mother tongue.
→ also called a working language, bridge language, vehicular language or unifying language
<중 략>
What is ‘euphemisms’?
→ a word or phrase that replaces a taboo word or serves to avoid frightening or unpleasant subjects
→ a word or a phrase has a connotative meaning, reflecting attitudes, emotions, value judgments, etc. e.g. die → pass away
morticians → funeral director
lavatory → Toilet → powder room
(lavatory is more acceptable than toilet.)
The use of epithets for people of different religions, nationalities, or races tells us something about the users of these words.
e.g. kike(for Jew)
wop(for Italian)
nigger or coon(for African American)
slant(for Asian)
towelhead(for Middle Eastern Arab)
The epithets used by a majority to demean a minority → as terms of bonding and friendship among members of the minority.
