본문내용
In “Eveline” by James Joyce, the character ‘Eveline’ is oppressed for several reasons. Eveline always had a desire to escape her burdened and routine life, but because of her oppression, she didn’t leave with Frank to Buenos Ayres. Eveline is oppressed by the promise of her mother, sense of duty, the fear of change.
One of the reasons why Eveline stayed is because of her promise to her mother, who passed away. Before she arrived at the dock, she heard the sound of a street organ that reminded her of the promise that she made with her mother. Eveline’s mother wanted her daughter, Eveline, to keep her family together for as long as possible. “Keep the home together as long as she [Eveline] could” (Joyce 6). “She [Eveline] had hard work to keep the house together and to see that the two young children who had been left to her charge went to school regularly and got their meals regularly” (Joyce 5).
