본문내용
The Canterbury tale was the most popular epic poetry in 14th century in England. The trend, at that time, was a tale that several stories are combined into. Decameron, which is a like Canterbury tale, show the trend us well.
Anyhow, it is not sure that how much Chaucer was influenced by those tales. for Roman ecclesiastical authority, wrote 4 tales each (2 on the way, 2 on the way back). In the real tale, however, each pilgrim wrote only 1 tale each except Chaucer and 7 of pilgrims are not even shown in the stories. "The tale of Father" and "The tale of sir Thomas" were discontinued, and "The tale of Chef" and "The tale of Landlord" were incomplete. Only 20 stories are completed.
And now I will talk about the Clerk's tale and its exemplum in the Canterbury tales. But I will deal with not only just exemplums but also feminine themes. So we have to think about several exemplums and feminism through the Canterbury tales. Because the Clerk's tale is merely not his mention but Chaucer's talking what is thought and intended by himself. Then first, let's think about exemplums of the Clerk's tale in the Canterbury tales.
