After the Korean War in 1953, Korea was in utter confusion. A new government reformed Korean economy and its society, and Korea was known as a developing country. After only a few decades, Korea became a high-tech industrial country of established reputation in the world. It is surprising to the world. All the achievements the country has made were from education. It does not mean that we had a good education system. All the things that we could have done were only study and study because we had nothing to compete with against another strong country such as the U.S. and many of the European nations. However, a problem has been raised. The old style of Korean education system has still remained even though their ultimate purpose of education has been changed from supplying vocational working forces to getting into a university or achieving personal life goals. For example, spanking and the hours of studying under inferior conditions are not new things in Korean high schools. Also, universities’ entrance standards are still only based on entrance exam scores.
