To eliminate evil spirits, Yang(陽: positive power)
is needed. The red bean was a symbol of Yang.
Dongzhi has the shortest sun of the year. Ancestors thought this day had the strongest Yin(陰: the negative principle in nature) power. There are a lot of evil sprit on Dongzhi.

Ancient Korean considered that red bean was a symbol of Yang to defeat evil spirit. In this reason, people eat red-bean soup.
Also sprinkling Patzuk over doors and walls is one of the method to eliminate diseases and disaster.
