CHAPTER 12 Adjectives and Adverbs

CHARACTERISTICS OF ADJECTIVES
Adjectives describe the properties of an entity that a noun represents.

Stacking of Adjectives
Unlike determiners, adjectives can occur one after another. This is referred to as "stacking." However, stacks of more than three adjectives rarely occur, and the adjectives tend to occur in a preferred order. (1) subjective judgement or evaluation (2) an adjective of measurement (3) an adjective of color (4) the material

Gradability of Adjective
Most adjectives are gradable; that is, they can indicate degrees of a property. Some gradable adjectives have comparative (-er) and superlative (-est) forms, while others use the adverbs more and most to express varying degrees.
Negative gradability is indicated by pacing less and least before adjectives to create the comparative and superlative forms.

Gradability of Absolute Adjectives
The meaning of absolute adjectives is supposedly not gradable as they express a quality that cannot be increased or decreased. (absolute, complete, correct, essential, impossible, perfect, pregnant, ultimate, and unique)

Gradability of Participial Adjectives
Adjectives are frequently formed from present or past participles.

a. That was really an interesting lecture.
b. He was standing around with a bored expression on his face.
