As we have seen, blood vessels deliver blood from the heart to the body and return it to the heart. There are three main types of blood vessel in the body: arteries, capillaries and veins:
Arteries carry blood away from the heart and, as such, the flow of blood in them is pulsatile and at high pressure. They branch into progressively smaller arteries and eventually into even smaller vessels known as arterioles and then into capillaries.
Capillaries are the smallest vessels in the body and they supply blood to most of the body’s tissues, allowing transport of nutrients between the blood and the tissues.
After passing through the capillaries, blood returns to the heart via the veins and intermediary vessels called venules. Flow of blood within the veins is not pulsatile and is at lower pressure that in the arteries.
All blood vessels are tubes consisting of a vessel wall surrounding the open channel, or lumen, through which the blood flows. As shown in the slide, the vessel wall of veins and arteries has three layers: the tunica intima, tunica media and tunica adventitia.
