목차
A Satire by describing characters as animals in “the Maus” by Art Spiegelman
본문내용
“The Mice” is a reportage cartoon that combines cartoon with journalism , which shows the real experience of author’s father during the World War Ⅱ. It means that it conveys core information through cartoons rather than explanation. So, it has to restrain explanation as much as possible. That is why author Art Spiegelman describes characters as animals, not human beings; the Jews are mice, the Poles are pigs, and the Germans are cats. This kind of character setup helps readers understand characters more easily through the symbolic properties of the animals without describing the difference between Nazi and Jews in direct words. We can easily recognize characters by their appearance. And their appearance (‘what kind of animal’) is considered as the characteristic of each nation. For example, the Poles are represented by pigs because they act only pursuing the benefits. Some people yelled to report the Jews to Nazi like an old woman at a window (137).
