1. Activation overpotential (Charge transfer overpotential):
At low current density, region I in Figure 2, the shape of the polarization curve is governed by the activation overpotential, which arises from the kinetics of charge transfer reactions across interfaces and represents the magnitude of activation energies when reactions propagate at the rate required by the current.
To decrease activation overpotential, new catalyst materials, new electrolyte materials or new electrode microstructure can be applied to increase the activity of the reactant.
- Factors which can affect the activation overpotential:
① types of reactions and catalyst materials,
② electrode microstructure,
③ reactant activities,
④ electrolyte material (acidic/alkaline),
⑤ temperature
