A. The atomic resolution is not always observable. – certain tip-sharpening procedures must be carried out.
B. During the scanning, the image often shows spontaneous changes, and the atomic resolution could appear or disappear unexpectedly.
C. In many cases, the atomic corrugation is inverted. – a spontaneous tip restructuring
D. The atomic corrugation has an almost exponential dependence on the tip-sample distance. The Highest atomic corrugations are always observed at very short tip-sample distance.

A . Click “full” in the ‘Scan Panel’ to maximize the range of the scan.
B. Start measuring by clicking “Start” in the ‘Scan
Panel. If the preparation of tip and sample, and the
approach were successful, images of the
measurement will show a line in the ‘LineView’ (See
Picture a) and a plane in the ‘TopView’. Watch the
displays for a while until the ‘TopView’-image has been
drawn about three times.
C. A ‘nervous’ line in the ‘LineView’ indicates a bad tunneling contact (See Picture b). Usually this is caused by the tip being too blunt or instable. This means that you should stop measuring and cut a new tip:
