Approach To The Nonacademic Interests Through The Academic Eyes
In “Hidden Intellectual,” published in the Journal of the They Say/ I Say : The Moves That Matter in Academic Writing, Gerald Graff does not confine the intellect exclusively to the school or college work. He thinks street smarts are also intellectual. He gives his adolescence time as an example, revealing ambivalent attitude. Although it to be smart, he confesses he was an anti-intellectual. According to his essay, he loves to read magazines and novels about sports rather than school work. Moreover, he tries to hide intellect such as correct grammar and pronunciation. Graff also gives the examples of cultural ambivalent attitude for intellectualism. He describes social expression about the marriage between Marilyn Monroe and the playwright Arthur Miller as a triumph of geek. Nevertheless, he believes his young time leads him to the entrance to start intellectual life.
