12.1 Fiber-optic networks an overview
1. Point-to-Point Links
- Let`s consider long-distance telephone networks. The long-
distance carriers use mesh topology for their networks.(See
Figure 1.2.))
- suppose you need to place a call from New York City to Los Angeles. Your request for a connection goes to your central end office; from there it is directed through a central tandem office to the long-distance carrier`s nearest switching center. You may recall that the central end office(CO) is your nearest switching center. Equal access to your telephone line for nay long-distance carrier is gained through what`s called the point of presence(POP). This calling process is shown schematically in Fig. 12.1.
