The Passion of the Grotesques in Winesburg, Ohio
For most of its readers, Winesburg, Ohio is very likely to be a dark and depressing story. As the author depicts them in the first chapter, the characters in Winesburg, Ohio are “grotesques”, whose impossible dreams and invisible barriers blind and prevent them from achieving their goals. Sherwood Anderson tells the readers various stories of Winesburg people with fallen dreams; however, they never give up hope to achieve their goals. This sometimes makes them seem eccentric, which isolates them from society. Although the public’s prejudice and misunderstanding prevent them from expressing their disparate dreams, the townspeople of Winesburg share one thing in common: these loners have an indomitable passion of life, thus they reject being socially buried by the severance of relations.
