Nineteenth century England was a society whose norms would be very different from the modern world. In particular, this was a period in history where a woman`s fate or future could be decided by the type of marriage she made or secured for herself. A 21st century woman would require a great deal of imagination in order to understand what life was like for the female gender at this time in history. Because of her dependence on man for food, shelter, clothing, and entertainment, a woman`s ultimate goal was to find a suitable marriage, preferably from a husband who was rich, of some influence, and could provide security for her and her children. A woman was groomed since childhood to become the perfect wife – someone dignified and could successfully hosts parties and gatherings for her husband. This was a person whose pleasures were focused on vanity, gossip and idleness. Women were to be accomplished in these feminine pursuits...................
