After reading Bartleby, the Scrivener, I felt that Bartleby is a very strange and weird person, because he not only doesn’t comply with the usage of narrator’s office but also acts out of the common sense. However, as I’ve thought about the person, Bartleby, I realized that I estimated him depending on general thought as the narrator did in the story. Then, I came to wonder what the common sense is, the general thought is and why we consider some people who resist to the common rule abnormal. So, I want to talk about several examples of Bartleby’s behavior that he resisted to the usage in narrator’s office and what meaning we could discover in his behavior.
First of all, here are several instances that Bartleby’s resistance to the usage. In Bartleby, the Scrivener, the narrator of this story says that ‘examining copies is a common usage and every copyist is bound to help examine his copy’ (1099). The narrator is a person who sticks to the common usage firmly. On the other hand, Bartleby refuses to examine copies as the common usage, saying “I would prefer not to.” He always says that he prefers not to.
