How long have you studied English in Korea? Surprisingly, Koreans study English for over 10 years, a total of 800 hours only in regular schooling. However, we are still struggling to learn English for our whole life. Furthermore, it is getting worse. Young children, who are under 8, they go to the particular English-language preschools where they should speak only English. According to the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, the number of English-language preschools reached 270 last year and they charged up to 1.7 million won per month. In addition, adults, they go to academies to get a high score on English assessment tests, such as TOEIC, OPIC, or TOFEL, to be promoted to higher positions. A big question is why we aren’t English experts by now. I found the reasons in the English education system in Korea. It has to be changed to offer children a better English study atmosphere and reduce parents’ pressure on English education fees.
