1. Explain why economists usually oppose controls on prices.
To economists, prices are not the outcome of some haphazard process.
Prices, they contend, are the result of the millions of business and consumer decisions that lie behind the supply and demand curves.
Prices have the crucial job of balancing supply and demand and, thereby, coordinating economic activity. When policymakers set prices by legal decree, they obscure the signals that normally guide the allocation of society’s resources.
2. Give an example of a price ceiling and an example of a price floor.
A price ceiling is a legal maximum on the price of a good or service. An example is rent control. If the price ceiling is below the equililbrium price, the quantity demanded exceeds the quantity supplied. Because of the resulting shortage, sellers must in some way ration the good or service among buyers.
