. Discuss the female characters in Mother and a Guest (1961).
“The mother and the guest” reinforce or erode sexist stereotypes of women?
The movie, “Mother and the Guest” reflects the clash of values between pre modern age and new-fashioned society. The director, Cho, Moon Jin, represents the delicate feelings and moral conflict between Ok hee’s mother and the guest, Mr. Han through the innocent child’s point of view. Compared to the old society, the modern women not only freely have a romantic relationship but also remarry and divorce with freedom. Moreover, women are autonomous and independent. However, the women like Ok Hee’s mother, who is represent as an universal and traditional role of the mother in this society, has to abandon her own life and sacrifice herself to devote her own daughter and the mother in law. In this movie, “Mother and the Guest,” the director provides a gentle satire on the attitudes and behavior common to the feudal period. As s Cho, Moon Jin delineates his characters; he explores the sexual stereotypes of the early days of the 1930 century. While characters such as Ok Hee’s mother and her mother in law reinforce these sexist views by acting out the prejudices of the day, his other characters, the maid and the mother’s friend, clearly challenge the stereotype by refusing to play the expected role in the old-fashioned marriage market. The director’s use of feminine roles helps to show a clear message about the expectations placed upon women
