1. Introduction
The most important question in second language acquisition is how someone can be a better language learner. And one of the most critical factors considered by the majority of people is age. The Critical Period Hypothesis focuses on age. According to this theory, there exists a critical period in second language acquisition and after passing this period people have a difficult time in learning languages and never acquire languages perfectly. As this theory is attractive to not only linguists but also normal people, these days in Korea there is a trend of teaching English to children as early as possible and most people believe that “the younger, the better.”
In this paper, the issue of the existence of a critical period is addressed. Especially, this paper overviews the various hypotheses about language learning and the critical period. Also, factors affecting language learning (not inborn, but factors acquired in the course of a lifetime) and the results of linguistic research on the hypotheses are addressed. Then, this paper tries to find out the optimal language learning age to be a better learner with considering influential factors by applying theories into practice. Some personal experience related to the topic will be also presented.
