For the Greeks. beauty was a virtue: a kind of excellence. 그리스인들에게 아름다움은 큰 덕목이었다. 일종의 우월함이었다.
Persons then were assumed to be what we now have to call--lamely, enviously-- whole persons. 당시의 인간형은 현재 우리들이 마지못해 혹은 부럽게 `전인`이라고 칭해야 하는 인간상으로 여겨졌었다.
If it did occur to the Greeks to distinguish between a person`s "inside" and "outdside," they still expected that inner beauty would be matched by beauty of the other kind. 그리스인들에게 인간의 내면과 외면을 구분하는 경우가 있었다 하더라도, 그때 역시 그들은 내적인 미가 외모의 미와 일치할 것이라 생각했다.
