In the film Gattaca, directed by Andrew Niccol, contrast between characters is used to communicate the concept of genetic discrimination otherwise known in Gattaca as “genoism”. In Gattaca, genetic engineering has progressed to the point where potential parents can select their best genes to ensure their child is genetically perfect. The protagonist Vincent, however, is conceived and born without such technology and from the very beginning he is doomed to life as a second class citizen or an “invalid”. The message of discrimination is conveyed by the contrast between Vincent and his “valid” brother Anton, and his “borrowed ladder” Jerome Morrow, whose identity Vincent assumes. The world of Gattaca is dominated by technology and science.
A stark contrast between Vincent and his brother Anton is established before they are even born. Vincent is not considered genetically worthy enough to have his father’s name. Anton, whose genes were selected by his parents, was as Vincent bitterly tells us “a son my father considered worthy of his name”. The audience’s first image of Anton is not as a human being but a collection of carefully selected genes.
