매슈 아놀드의 전기(biography)매슈 아놀드(Matthew Arnold, 1822-1888)는 비평서들로 유명하지만 애초에는 시인으로 출발했다. 럭비교 학생시절부터 인정을 받았으며, 아버지 토마스 아놀드(Thomas Arnold)가 엄격하고 혁신적인 교장으로 전국적인 명성을 얻고 있던 시기였다. 아놀드는 옥스퍼드대 베일렬 칼리지(Balliol College)에서 공부했다. 1844년에 옥스퍼드에서 학사학위를 끝마친 후에, 고전학 교사로 럭비교에 귀환했다. 1851년 결혼한 후에, 아놀드는 학교 장학사 공직을 시작했다. 직책이 힘들었지만 그로 인해서 영국과 유럽대륙을 여행할 수 있는 기회를 갖게 되었다. 이 직업으로 35년을 봉직하면서 아놀드는 교육에 관심을 갖게 되었고 그러한 관심이 비평서 저술과 시집으로 실현되었다. 이 결과로 Empedocles on Etna (1852) 그리고 Poems (1853)가 출판되었고, 시인으로서 아놀드의 명성을 쌓게 되었다. 1857년에 옥스퍼드대 시 전공 교수직에 임명되어 1867년까지 10년 간 봉직했다. 아놀드는 라틴어가 아닌 영어로 강의를 하는 최초의 교수가 되었다. 이 시기 동안에 아놀드는 유명한 비평서들을 출판하였다.
