Ⅰ. Emergence of Factory Farming
The form of animal farming has changed dramatically. Many people may think a farm as an image of barns and fields run by family unit in rural areas. But some farms have massive industrial facilities operated by a large corporation. These are called factory farms. Although they make up a small percentage of farms, factory farms handle a large percentage of the meat in the entire market. These corporations have vertically integrated operations. In other words, they not only manage barns to feed and raise animals, but also operate the facilities which produce feed for animals and the facilities to slaughter, package and distribute meats. Economies of scale allow corporations to less unit costs on each of these procedure than small farmers spend.
Factory farming began in the 1920s by discovering of vitamins A and D. If farmers add vitamins A and D to feeds, animals can be raised without any exercise and sunlight. This enabled lots of animals to be raised indoors. The problem in raising animals indoors was the spread of disease, which development of antibiotics resolved in the 1940s
